3)    ICHF 2011 in Alexandria 27-29 May 2011
It has just been announced that the International Conference on the History of Freemasonry (ICHF) will move from Edinburgh toAlexandria, Virginia, USA where the George Washington Masonic National Memorial will host the conference between 27 - 29 May 2011. To view the venue click here or on the previous link. More details will be posted soon on www.ichfonline.org/news.htm. Following the huge success of the ICHF in Edinburgh in 2009, the CRFF has again been asked to preside the Academic Committee. We very much look forward to co-organize the program of the conference and are thrilled by the prospect of trans-Atlantic co-operation in the area.
This early announcement will allow European scholars to apply for appropriate funding. The CRFF envisages contacting the major Masonic collections in the US so that research stays in connection with a potential conference visit can be arranged. We are happy to write letters of support for any university-based scholars who would like to apply for funding to take part in the conference and to visit relevant archives and collections.
ICHF 2007 and 2009 Publications
We repeatedly receive requests concerning proceedings from the ICHF in Edinburgh in 2007 and 2009. Unlike other conferences, no official proceedings were produced, but the authors are encouraged to submit their papers to relevant publications such as the Journal for Research into Freemasonry and FraternalismHeredomor AQC. The CRFF has collected a number of papers related to the history of British freemasonry that will be published shortly (presumably in January 2010). Look out for the announcement of this new title.
4)    History prize announced for research into mark masonry
An initiative to encourage research into the history of Mark Masonry has been launched by the Mark Provincial Grand Master of London under the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons for England and Wales.
It takes the form of an essay competition and has the approval of the Grand Secretary of the Order. Prestige and important support has also been provided by the Director of the Centre for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism at Sheffield University, Dr Andreas Önnerfors, and R W Bro James Daniel, a leading Masonic researcher, who addressed Mark Grand Lodge on the subject of the history of the Order at the 150th Anniversary Celebratory Meeting in 2006. Both of these leading historians have agreed to act as judges in the first year of the competition.
The seeds for this initiative were sown at the 150th anniversary celebrations of the premier Mark Grand Lodge at the Royal Albert Hall, when R W Bro James Daniel highlighted the fact that the study of the history of this Order has been a much-neglected area of masonic research.
This thought was taken up by members of the London Mark Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge No. 1870 who have been working for some time on an initiative to expand the theme of the Lodge, ‘Service to the Order’.
They discussed the deficiency in Masonic research, which was highlighted and agreed that an award for the best essay submitted each year on the history of Mark Masonry might go a little way towards helping remedy the defect and could stimulate wider interest in the subject.
The Provincial Grand Master of London warmly approved of the idea and intends to present the award himself at a meeting of the Lodge each year.
The aim is to run the competition along similar lines to the annual ‘Norman B Spencer Prize’ which is sponsored by Quatuor Coronati (Craft) Lodge. The competition will be open to anyone in good standing with a Lodge on the register of Mark Grand Lodge and it is hoped that it will attract entries from far and wide - not just from London.
Entrants may select their own subject, which must be related to the antecedents and development of Mark Masonry in the territories, which are now or were originally under the jurisdiction of the Mark Grand Lodge of England and Wales. While the chosen subject must therefore be within the field of Mark masonic history, this field includes, for example, masonic periodicals, the coverage of freemasonry in the profane press, biography, antiquities, regalia, jewels, glassware, ceramics, books, documents, architecture and historiography. Essays showing Mark Masonry in the wider masonic and social contexts of the time will be particularly welcome.  On the other hand, ritual subjects, lodge histories and histories of Mark Provinces and Districts are not generally acceptable, and papers of a contemplative or philosophical nature are unlikely to qualify.
Each year, the Prize, will be awarded to the author of the essay which is judged by the Board of Assessors made up of three people appointed annually, in consultation with the Provincial Grand Master, as being the winner - or it may be shared between entrants.  The Board of Assessors will be made up of three people appointed annually by the Lodge Committee, in consultation with the Provincial Grand Master.
Essays should be written in English and consist of 5,000 to 10,000 words.  Full details and a copy of the rules of the competition may be obtained from the Secretary of the London Mark Provincial Grand Stewards’ Lodge No. 1870 (whose contact details are published in the Year Book of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of London) or they can be viewed on the website of the Mark Provincial Grand Lodge of London (http://markprovinceoflondon.com/grand_lodge.htm).
The winner will receive an engraved keystone, an invitation to present a summary of his essay to the London Mark Provincial Grand Stewards’ Lodge and - it is hoped - much publicity for his work. The closing date for entries is the 31st December each year, and the first closing date will be the 31st December 2010.

Turisták az UGLE nagypáholyházában

„Harry herceg biztosan szabadkőművesnek áll”

Vendégségben az Angol Egyesült Nagypáholyban

2009. november 21., szombat

A felsőbb szinteken mintegy 1400 páholy bonyolítja üléseit.

A lapis lazulit a dekoratív hatása miatt fontos: ókori templomok falának a borítására használták, mivel a kék féldrágakő a fénytől függően változtatta a színét.

A Kazinczy év a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin könyvtárban

Származási hely: Profán gondolatok a szabadkőművességről

A 4. emeleti Művészeti Olvasó előterében, a fénymásoló mellett berendezett mini kiállítás anyagát idén  nyáron helyezték ki és mintegy egy évig lesz ott.

A könyvtár honlapján több összeállítás is foglalkozik Kazinczyval, ezeken elő-előfordul szabadkőművessége is:

"1784-től szabadkőműves. 1784–1786-ban zempléni és abaúji aljegyző, majd Kassán Török Lajos gróf mellett iskolai felügyelő, II. József modern, világi szellemű oktatási elveinek megvalósításáért küzd."

http://kazinczy2009.hu/eletrajz

"Kazinczy Ferenc földbirtokos nemesi család sarjaként látta meg a napvilágot 1759-ben. Tíz éves volt, amikor a sárospataki kollégiumban tanulmányait kezdte, ahonnan húsz éves korában előbb Kassára, később Eperjesre, végül Pestre vezetett útja, ahol joggyakorlatot folytatott. Ekkor került kapcsolatba a szabadkőműves mozgalommal, 1784-ben lett tagja a szervezetnek."

"Az 1780-as évek elején belefog Gessner-fordításába, levelezésbe kezd külföldi kortárs írókkal, 1784 elején szabadkőműves lesz. ...

A felvilágosodásról, a szabadkőművességről szólnak tankölteményei, episztolái."

"1784. január 16-án szabadkőművessé lett; felvették a Miskolcon működő Erényes Világpolgárok nevű szabadkőműves páholy tagjai közé, ahol az Orpheus fedőnevet kapta. A páholy megszűnte után belépett a Rózsa Rendbe; ott a Fichtenbaum Kálmán nevet adták neki."

Szabadkőművesség a Napútban

A blokk talán legjobb műve Benedek Szabolcs: Mítoszok a szabadkőművesség körül című írása, amelyben cáfolja a Rosslyn kápolna szabadkőművességének legendáját, az USA - alapítóinak, elnökeinek, városterveinek stb.

Feloldották Angliában a bírák bejelentési kötelezettségét szabadkőművességükről

Ugyanaz a Jack Straw isnmertette november 5-én a bejelentési kötelezettség feloldását, aki 12 éve főszerepet játszott a bevezetésében.

A vizsgálatnak, ill. a szabadkőműves tagságnak a politikai harcban való felhasználása valószínűleg összefüggésben lehetett Stephen Knight 1984-ben megjelent és nagy port felvert 'A testvériség' (The Brotherhood) című szabadkőműves ellenes könyvével.

The Centre for Research into Freemasonry

CRFF Newsletter 43 (2009:10)
October 2009

Dear colleagues and friends,

October has been a busy month with a number of interesting events taking place in the UK and elsewhere. With a slight delay we hope that you will appreciate following news. Look out for new publications among our Working Papers, as two are about to be published very soon. Our book on Freemasonry in Eighteenth century Russia is selling well, so make sure you order your copy right away!
All the best, Andreas Önnerfors
1)    November 11 ‘Masonic Conspiracy online’’
Wednesday November 11 at 5.15pm PhD-candidate Dorothe Sommer will be lecturing as part of our Sheffield lecture series “Perceptions of Freemasonry” on the idea of Masonic conspiracy as represented on the Internet.
Place: Jessop West Bldg,
G.01a (room to left)
1 Upper Hanover Street
S3 7RA Sheffield
Events available on audio
Our event on Dan Brown’s new novel “The Lost Symbol” was recorded and accessible in audio-format via our website under “News and Events”.
Prof Margaret C Jacob’s lecture on the paradoxes of modernity as represented in masonic sources from Bordeaux is also now available.
2)    Study day on Freemasonry and the Jacobites at the Sorbonne, Saturday 5th December
Jean-Pierre Brach and Jean-Pierre Laurant of the University of Paris, Paris IV Sorbonne as well as the journal Politica Hermetica(see www.politicahermetica.com/) are co-organising a study day on Jacobites and Freemasonry in Paris on the first weekend of December. We will post the final program on our website as soon as it has been made available. Two excellent British speakers, Dr. Steve Murdoch from the University of St. Andrews as well as Dr. Robert Collis from the CRFF in Sheffield will participate and we look forward to the outcome of this event.
3)    Successful CMRC conference on The Origins of Freemasonry
The annual Canonbury Masonic Research Centre conference (co-organised by the CRFF), which this year centred on the topic of ‘The Origins of Freemasonry’, gathered an impressive line-up of eminent scholars in the field, such as professors Benimeli, Jacob, Stevenson and Prescott, as well as representatives of a new generation of scholarship, including the post-doctoral researchers Robert Péter, Robert Collis and Natalie Bayer and PhD-candidates, such as the promising Frank Albo from Peterhouse College, Cambridge. A novelty in the conference programme was the organisation of a screening of the documentary “The Scottish Key”, hosted by Dr. Andrew Pink at the University College of London, which was followed by a discussion in the presence of the co-producer Tristan Boulard. The conference clearly witnessed a larger number of delegates than in previous years. Academics praised the scholarly quality of the presentations, whilst freemasons expressed contentment at the clear focus of the conference on the history of the craft. A conference dinner at the newly refurbished The Canonbury, with world-class entertainment by the violinist Eugene Sarbu, provided an excellent forum for relaxed discussions between conference speakers and delegates. The conference touched upon the most relevant questions related to the origins of freemasonry, its religious roots, its significance for the early Enlightenment generation, its place in the identity formation within British pre-industrial artisan culture, as well as of late eighteenth-century Russian intellectuals. The phenomenon of English accepted freemasonry was treated, Rosicrucian myths were deconstructed and the place of freemasonry in the gothic revival of English architecture in the nineteenth-century were highlighted. These are just a few examples of the papers delivered and the most fascinating experience of conference participation were creative crossovers between various topics. The conference proceedings are now under preparation and the volume will constitute a major work of reference in the future.
4)    Quatuor Coronati is pushing the limits
The German research lodge Quatuor Coronati No 808, under the United Grand Lodges of Germany (see www.quatuor-coronati.org/2.html), organised its 36th annual workshop between October 9th-11th on ‘Religion and Religious Enlightenment in Freemasonry’ in Espenau outside Cassel in Hesse. The director of the CRFF attended and was elected a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the research lodge. Over a number of yearsQuatuor Coronati has taken the wise decision to open up its conferences to academic topics and participants. Papers presented included: Appearances of the religious; Esoteric religiosity and its importance for freemasonry; Religion and religiosity in early freemasonry; Church service and Masonic ritual: overlaps, differences, opposites; The importance of religion in contemporary German society; religious discourse in German freemasonry. The Master of QC lodge, Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Grün, stated: “We have to open up Masonic research to impulses in the academic world and our open conferences create an important interface for revitalisation and exchanges of knowledge”. Professor Monika Neugbauer-Wölk presented a much-praised overview of the hermetic origins of Masonic religiosity as represented in Anderson’sConstitutions. German research into freemasonry is developing a fruitful interaction between academic and Masonic world, the platform freimaurerforschung.de being a significant tool for networks between the German-speaking research community.

1% a szimbolikusoknak

A Magyaroszági Symbolikus (Szimbolikus) Nagypáholy honlapján közzétette, hogy a 2008-as év adóbevallásainak civil szervezetek részére történő 1%-os felajánlásaiból 216799 forintot kapott.
